Audacity: remove or trim dead air
A careful manual workflow for reviewing silence without damaging pacing or dialogue.
Goal
The goal is not to remove every pause. The goal is to review whether a flagged silent section sounds intentional, then trim only what hurts the listening experience.
Suggested workflow
- Zoom into the silent region and listen to the transition before and after it.
- Check whether the silence comes from a missing clip, bad edit or natural pause.
- Trim conservatively so the pacing still sounds human.
- Export the file and run another AudioLinter analysis afterwards.
Common mistake
Editors often remove too much silence after seeing a warning. That can make a host sound unnaturally rushed, so always review by ear instead of treating silence as automatically wrong.
